The Owl Tree – an Interactive Wish Sculpture First Night 2012 in Raleigh, North Carolina

My Owl Tree Wish Sculpture traveled to Raleigh, NC this December and took part in the First Night 2012 festivities. Installed outdoors in downtown Raleigh, it attracted hundreds of children and adults throughout the sunny day and illuminated night.

Visitors were invited to write their wishes for the New Year onto a piece of silver mylar “feather” and then attach it onto the Owl’s cape, flowing behind the sculpture. Then, it was time to look into the Owl Tree’s hematite eyes, push the lever down so that the branchlike wings would rise and flap the wish out into the universe. With each wish made, the wings rose into the air! It was fun to do and a compelling sight. By the end of the evening the Owl Tree’s cape was filled with silver and shining!

Birch Woman Elder -Permanent Installation at Wiawaka Holiday House, 2011

This spring I built another stacked clay sculpture which I call Birch Woman Elder. It was installed this past August, 2011 and stands by birch trees with beautiful Lake George as its backdrop. It accompanies the Birch Woman Sculpture and Chair, installed in 2010, on the grounds of the historic Wiawaka Holiday House in Lake George, NY. [www.wiawaka.org]

Homeplace Installation at the Longhall Gallery, SSYMCA Hanover, MA 2010

Homeplace is a site-specific installation of swimming figures and animals for the Longhall Gallery at the SSYMCA. Viewers saw this vibrant installation as they walked towards the pool. I created this group of large scale “drawings with bleach” on large pieces of blue cotton material, each 6 to 10 feet long. The successive panels relates to each other. They are attached to pieces of bamboo from my garden. This wonderful process of using bleach to draw on material allows for experimentation and surprise effects.

Community Nest – Artsplosure 2011 – Raleigh, NC

I was invited to create an interactive sculpture for the Artsplosure 2011 Arts Festival , held each year outdoors in Moore Park – located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Using a giant gourd, the neck of an old guitar, mylar wings , feathers and clay, I assembled a large golden bird that hung from a tree in the park. Below it , we began to build the Community Nest. Everyone at the festival was invited to create a yarn “god’s eye” or wrapped yarn animal to attach to the Community Nest – and to weave their written dreams into the assemblage nest.

Birch Woman – A Permanent Sculpture at Wiawaka Holiday House, Lake George, NY

In 2010, I created this site-specific Birch Woman sculpture. It was permanently installed on the stump of a birch tree on the beautiful grounds of the historic Wiawaka Holiday House located on Lake George, NY. A wooden sculptural chair, built by Craig Canning, is installed in front of the tree. Visitors are welcome to sit down and relax with the Birch Woman Tree.

“Surfacing: Story as Muse” (2008)

This installation explores the relationship between narrative words, visual imagery and kinesthetic senses. It evokes moments of connection with two mythic stories that have become a muse for me. Seals, selkies, swimmers and Sedna, Inuit goddess of the sea, all swim together in this work. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in the water of the stories.

The sculptures are handbuilt clay vessels that have transformed into figurative swimming figures. Many are burnished and then blackened by fire in a traditional pitfire method. How the fire burns will mark the pieces!
